Ex. #7

The exercise can be completed individually, with a partner, or as an in-class exercise. This exercise is due in two weeks. Read the essays this week (they are short) and try to answer as many of the questions below as you can. I will give you some class time next week to :workshop" your answers as a class. Turn in your individual papers the following week. Read the group of short essays written by Francis Bacon and complete the following:

Identify the primary rhetorical mode used in each of the short essays. Also identify at least one secondary or support rhetorical mode from each essay. (See review handout on rhetorical writing modes and consult your Handbook index.)

Identify 5 rhetorical devices in essay #2. (You will need to consult one of the on-line data bases on rhetoric that I showed you during our library orientation; or simply search Google.com for Rhetorical Devices. Also try Tropes and Figurative Language as key words.)

Identify any logical constructions from Exercise #7 in any of the Bacon Essays. (You may stop when you are sure you found five.) You should also consult several of the websites on Logic that I told you about. Or just do a Google.com search for Logic, logical arguments, and logical fallacies as key words.

Complete the Sample Essay Analysis Worksheet that I started for the essay "Of Studies." In other words, break down the rest of the essay one sentence at a time by telling me if Bacon uses a specific rhetoric mode, the purpose or function of the sentence in the essay, is the sentence a special rhetorical construction or device, and what is the effect or result of the sentence in the essay. (See Sample Handout)

Begin planning your research paper using this Strategic Planning Worksheet. Turn in your worksheet with a rough draft on April 30 to ensure good feedback before you make your final draft. As a last resort, show me your rough draft and worksheet on the designated paper presentation day.
