Exercise # 4

Identifying elements of description and rhetorical figures in Poetry:

(You can work with a partner or in a small group, but turn in your typed exercise on you own.)

Instructions: After reading carefully any three poems from our text or the video lectures, find and identify by stanza and line number as well as by typing them out examples for the following poetic terms or rhetorical figures:

  1. Find at least 5 metaphorical expressions or similes in each piece.

  3. Identify any uses of analogy in each piece.

  4. Identify any uses of vertical, horizontal, depth, or circular arrangement in each piece.

  5. In each piece, identify at least 5 memorable passages or lines that are loaded with sensory detail.
