Exercise #27 (Generating Ideas for Your Term Paper)

From the first 8 short stories and the questions from Exercises #23 and #24, write down at least 5 ideas for a term paper. Each idea should focus on only 1 or 2 of the stories at this point.

Be sure that your ideas have something to do with the 8 general categories from your note taking sheets: Plot, Characterization, Setting, Theme, Language and Style, Narrative Exposition, etc.

Sample Ideas:

Discuss how the author’s use of the mountain schoolhouse Setting in "The Guest" is important to the narrative of the story. (This could be in terms of Narrative, Plot, Characterization.)

Compare how the relationship between a husband and wife are similar or different in "Separating" and "The Swimmer." (This discussion could involve either Plot, Theme, Setting, or Characterization.)

Compare or Contrast how the authors use or handle the concept or subject of "time" in their stories or the sequence of their narrative, especially in "The Swimmer" or in "The Garden of Forking Paths." (This could be discussed in terms of Setting, Theme, Language, Exposition of the Narrative, Plot, or Characterization.)
