Question to Consider Regarding Assigned Short Stories (Group 4)

Use the following questions to stimulate your thinking and discussion and to assist you in forming possible questions and arguments for your term paper thesis.  Each question should be answered with 1 or 2 sentences.

Araby—by James Joyce

--Who is the narrator of this story? Discuss briefly.

--Describe the relationship between the narrator and Mangan and how they interrelate.

--Identify any religious images or connotations and how they affect the story.

--Is there a difference between how the narrator imagines Araby and how he finds it later?

Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street – by Herman Melville

--Discuss the meaning of Melville’s subtitle.

--Whose point of view tells the story? Is the narrator reliable?

--Compare this story to Gogol’s "The Overcoat."

--How does the view from Bartleby’s window foreshadow the ending of the story?

--Some have analyzed Bartleby as a Christ-figure. Identify any specific biblical references.

The Necklace – by Guy de Maupassant

--Why does Mathilde borrow the necklace from her friend to wear at the ball?

--Can you provide examples of historical references in this story?

--Discuss how the ending of the story is ironic. Are there any other ironic elements?

--Discuss the narrator and the point of view of the story.

--In what ways is this story similar to "Dead Men’s Path" by Chinua Achebe?

--Can you provide and discuss examples of the author’s economic use of narrative?
