Question to Consider Regarding Assigned Short Stories (Group 3)

Use the following questions to stimulate your thinking and discussion and to assist you in forming possible questions and arguments for your term paper thesis.  Each question should be answered with 1 or 2 sentences.

The Lady with the Pet Dog – Anton Chekhov

--Discuss how this story is driven by the main character.

--The climax of this story is very subtle. Compare this climax to a strong climax in an action story.

--Chekhov uses several settings in the story. Do the settings reveal or allude to anything about the main characters?

The Overcoat – by Nikolai Gogol

--One of Gogol’s favorite themes is a loathing of bureaucracy. How is this evidenced in the story?

--What kind of Narrator does Gogol use in the story?

--Does the Narrator’s attitude change throughout the story? How?

--Describe and discuss the main character in the story? What kind of character is he?

A Clean, Well-Lighted Place – by Ernest Hemingway

--Hemingway was a newspaper reporter during the Spanish Civil War. How does this affect his use of language? What is the significance of the repeated words and phrases throughout this story?

--In the story, what meanings can be associated with the title, "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place?"

--Discuss how the conversations between the two waiters contribute to the story.

--How is the setting of pre-civil war Spain important to the story?

--How is this story "unconventional" compared to other stories? What seems left out?

A Haunted House – by Virginia Woolf

--How and Why does the author keep changing the Point of View in the beginning of the story?

--How does the author provide facts about the location and setting of the story?
