General Evaluation Criteria of Essay and Term Paper Compositions

Does the writing demonstrate a clear central idea supported by evidence or examples?

Do paragraphs and sentences have good transitions linking them for smooth reading?

Does the title and first paragraph (or introduction) catch the reader’s attention?

Do sentences have varied lengths and types of constructions or rhetorical forms?

Do all sentences have proper grammatical construction and syntax?

Does the writer utilized various forms of rhetorical modes or styles (narration, description, explanation, definition, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, analysis, synthesis as well as some interesting uses of rhetorical figures?

Are there careless errors or poor proofreading?

(if applicable) Are sources cited and in proper format?

Is the paper easy to read and enjoyable to read—interesting? Neat?

(if an argument is asserted) Are logical constructs used properly and effectively?

Does the writer show progress and improvement through various revisions?

Does the paper respond well to the assignment—if applicable?

Is the writer’s thesis statement novel, interesting, insightful, original?

Are the arguments and main points well-supported by other illustrations, examples, etc.

Does the writer’s thesis carried out to its logical conclusion and restated at the end?

Does the essay exhibit a coherent plan that is followed in a logical sequence to its natural completion?

Is the plan balanced and serve the main purpose of the essay?

Are the sentences and paragraphs well-developed and in a rational progressive order?

Are words used precisely? Are any words especially well-used?

Does the writing seem authoritative to the reader? Do you trust what the writer says?
