Question to Consider Regarding Assigned Short Stories (Group 2)

Use the following questions to stimulate your thinking and discussion and to assist you in forming possible questions and arguments for your term paper thesis.  Answer each question in 2 or 3 sentences.

The Guest – by Albert Camus

--How does Camus use description of the landscape and the schoolhouse to provide relevant details in the story?

--What is the purpose of the Balducci character in the story?

--Discuss the dual meaning and other aspects of the story’s title, "The Guest."

--Discuss how this story might differ if told from the Arab’s point of view.

The Swimmer – by John Cheever

--Discuss how the characterization of Neddy seems to change throughout the story.

--Discuss some of the striking details of the other characters and how they relate to Neddy.

--How is the setting symbolic in this story? Provide details and examples.

--Discuss various approaches to the problematic passing of time in this story.

The Story of an Hour – by Kate Chopin (Also read "The Storm"

--How does Mrs. Mallard react to her husband’s death? Is it real sorrow that she expresses?

--Why does she suddenly become happy? Is her happiness justified.

--Show how Chopin presents her characters in situations without passing judgment on them.

--How does the ending of the story created an added effect? Does it feel contrived?

Hands – Sherwood Anderson

--Discuss the use of dreams and their importance in this story.

--Anderson uses figures of speech (especially similes) in his description. How do these images progress and deepen as the story progresses?
