Exercise # 13

Identifying elements of Description in Essays:

(You can work with a partner or in a small group, but turn in your typed exercise on you own. Check meaning of any unfamiliar terms in your glossaries or dictionary.)

Instructions: After reading carefully "My Dearest Sarah" by Sullivan Ballou (108-111) and the excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (113-117), find and identify by page and paragraph number as well as writing out the actual passage the following items:

--Find at least 5 metaphorical expressions or similes in each piece.

 

 

 

--Identify any uses of analogy in each piece.

 

 

--Identify any uses of vertical, horizontal, depth, or circular arrangement in each piece.

 

 

--In each piece, identify at least 5 memorable sentences or passages that are loaded with sensory detail.

 

 

 

--How is each piece organized: chronological, linear, spatial, or emphatic? How can you tell?

(Review terms from Ch. 3 in Strategy)

 

--Identify one use in each piece of both subjective and objective description.
