English 1010 James Maxfield, Instructor Exercise 12 Logical Fallacies and Logical Constructs Instructions: Invent and write at least 2 examples of the following valid logical constructs: Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens, Disjunctive Syllogism, and Hypothetical Syllogism. 5 points each for the first 8 correct examples. 3 points for each correct additional example (Max. 15 extra points). Then complete the handout of sample arguments and identify the logical fallacies—at least 10. Note: Do as many as you can, no penalty for guessing or looking them up on the Internet site of Logical Fallacies. 3 points each. 10 will count as an "A." Extra credit will be given for each correct identification over 10. This quiz will take the place of the first proofreading quiz. Extra points above 100% on the logic quiz will be added to the second Proofreading Quiz score. If you failed the Proofreading Quiz, students may voluntarily take a replacement test on grammar and punctuation and throw out their Proofreading quiz. The replacement test will be take home and you can use your Handbook. If you take the grammar test, it has 100 points. The first 40 points will replace the Proofreading Quiz, any extra points you earn will be applied to the logic quiz. Any points left over will be applied to your Portfolio Grade on a pro rata basis. |
