The many "How To Books" (books that show how something is completed or made) are written in this manner as well as many other types of writing, such as travel directions and sets of instructions to be followed: assembly of components, cooking recipes, and various business, scientific, and medical procedures. On a larger scale, Process mode is useful in explaining complicated processes like making or processing raw materials or finished products (steel, petroleum, and other chemical products and electrical devices) used for manufacturing, business, the sciences, and general commercial and consumer use. This mode may also be used to report findings based on surveys or experiments as well as case and field studies in science or business. Process writing must be: A few examples and ideas for topics: baking homemade bread, "backing up" your computer files, driving to Florida, running a piece of equipment, assembling something, repairing something, procedures in a doctor’s office or hospital or for a science experiment, a case study based on the use of a new product, legal instructions, office manuals, manufacturing or business processes, reports based on a survey or experiment—thousands of ideas for topics along these lines. Choose a process that is interesting and has information useful to other people.

Finish with 1 or 2 concluding sentences as may be appropriate to your process or situation. (You may use single space for this exercise. But be sure to double-space between paragraphs or individual steps.) Maximum: 1-page total. Due date is 1 week after assignment is given. |
