English 1010 Exercise #7 James Maxfield, Instructor More on Sentence Transformations: Active and Passive Voices Instructions: After reviewing the sections in your Handbook (205-07, 307-8, 291-15c), complete the following by identifying and converting all passive verbs to active and all active verbs to passive. Examples: Active: Later Kings of England made additions to the castle. Changed to passive: Additions to the castle were made by later Kings of England. Passive: Clams are considered a delicacy by many people. Changed to Active: Many people consider clams a delicacy. (Sentences taken from Shakespeare’s Unorthodox Biography by Diana Price.) --By 1598, Shakespeare had presumably written about seventeen plays, of which [Francis] Meres named twelve. --Many years after Shak[e]spere’s death, [Ben] Jonson wrote a piece, Timber, or Discoveries, in which he advised students to "read the best authors" first. --In fact, Jonson did not write once about Shakespeare during the Stratford man’s lifetime, and his silence is particularly deafening. --Just as the Secret Service and the press corps did not broadcast the facts about Kennedy or Roosevelt, Shakespeare’s professional colleagues did not write explicitly about a gentleman dramatist in their midst. --Some of Henslowe’s playhouse inventories were examined by early scholars but are no longer extant. --Like many 18th and 19th century scholars, Collier took possession of numerous historical documents. --No biography can account for [Shakespear’s] education. --The best that can be inferred is that if Shakspere wrote the plays, then he must have attended the Stratford grammar school. --In the absence of any concrete evidence supporting Shakspere’s schooling, some authorities have embraced the theory of education by osmosis. --Many critics sidestep Shakespeare’s evident command of languages not taught at the grammar school. |
