Exercise # 1: Sentence and Paragraph Building

Follow the following instructions and develop a paragraph from the sentence shown below.

Take a given sentence from your instructor.

Write a sentence that fits either before or after the given sentence.

Write another sentence either before or after the second sentence.

Keep adding or inserting sentences until you have a complete paragraph of at least 5 to 10 sentences.

If you have any short sentences, see if you can combine them with another sentence.

Make sure your paragraph is a complete thought, is understandable, and flows logically and smoothly from sentence to sentence.

Type the sentence for your Portfolio and turn in for next class.

Revise and edit the paragraph until it sounds just right.

After your paragraph is reviewed and corrected by the instructor, correct you master copy and revise it again if necessary to make it perfect.

If you made a substantial revision, you may turn both paragraphs in again for a re-grade.

Context: This sentence is from an editorial that discusses the major power shutdown that occurred in the summer of 2003.

Develop your paragraph around this sentence and context. Do not change any words or revise the given sentence.

"The estimated 50 million people affected by the power failure got a hard lesson in how miserable life can be without electricity."
