Inside Tri-C

Phi Theta Kappa Joins Recycling Effort

When Tri-C unveiled an expanded recycling effort this fall as part of its commitment to developing a Sustainability Plan, Phi Theta Kappa didn’t sit back and watch.  Instead, the Alpha Zeta Delta Chapter at the Metro Campus focused on how it could make a difference.

As a result, Alpha Zeta Delta launched its “E-Waste Not/Want Not” campaign where it is participating in the recycling effort of cell phones and ink cartridges.  The cell phones will be donated to the Domestic Violence Center of Cleveland during an event held in the Wi Fi Café entitled “Domestic Violence:  A Paradox of Affluence” (see attached flyer for times) on Oct. 15 at the Metro Campus.  These phones will be reused by victims of domestic violence in emergency situations.  The ink cartridges will be recycled as part of the international Keep America Beautiful campaign in conjunction with Staples, the office supply company.

Drop-off sites for cell phones and ink cartridges are located at the Metro Campus in MLA 103F, the Student Life office in MCC 102, or the Phi Theta Kappa office in MCC119.  While cell phones will be presented on Oct. 15, the collection program will run throughout the year.

“Students are not just learning the concepts of leadership through Phi Theta Kappa, they’re able to apply them,” said Dr. Dorothy Salem, faculty advisor of Alpha Zeta Delta at the Metro Campus.  “We really emphasize service.  There’s no better campus to see the application of service than here.”

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of the Two-Year College.  Alpha Zeta Delta takes part in countless volunteer projects that promote environmental awareness and community service.
