Sketchbook Weekly Assignments

You are required to draw in your sketchbook for a minimum of 15 minutes per day for 4 days of each week. Your sketchbook should be wirebound, approximate size 8"x10". Bring you sketchbook to class on Fridays for grading. The sketchbook assignments are worth 15 points of your grade. See the detailed listing below to know what you should be working on each week.

  • For all contour drawings use a black ballpoint pen – medium point.
  • For all value studies use an ebony or soft pencil (6B).
  • Write down the date and assignment in small letters in the lower right corner.
  • Write down the time you begin and finish drawing. When you are drawing, sometimes an hour seems like a minute and other times a minute seems like an hour.

Week 1

Contour drawing – hard edge objects
e.g. kitchen tools, shop tools – drill, power saw, vice grip, vice, hammer
Week 2

Contour drawing – soft edge objects
e.g. upholstered furniture, pillows, draperies, blankets, clothing draped over a chair, clothing on a hanger, shoes, hats, gloves, backpack
Don’t do stuffed animals.
Week 3

Contour drawing - overlapping shapes - develop relationships between shapes - be aware of the composition - bases of objects relative to each other. Arrange 3 or more objects so that some parts overlap each other. Draw only what you see, not what is hidden.
Week 4

Contour drawing - draw what is in the corner of a room - your environment - zoom out so that what you draw includes the floor and ceiling lines.
Week 5

Value study of at least 3 eggs and part of the carton - set up with a strong light source coming from one side. Include cast shadows and background values. Remember the eggs are "white" so use the background value to define the edges. Use a soft pencil, ebony or 6B.
Week 6

Value study - vegetables and fruit, pencil. Edge lines should disappear. Change value to define edges. See and represent relative values.
Week 7

Value study - any objects of your choice.
Week 8

More practice: value study - any objects of your choice.
Week 9

No sketchbook assignment.
Week 10

Perspective. Find the horizon line and vanishing points for the objects in 2 photographs. One should be an outside view, the other an inside view. Find photo references for your project. Practice perspective covered in class.
Week 11

No sketchbook assignment. Work on your perspective project.
Week 12

Create 10 values in 1 x 1.5" boxes using crosshatching. Create 10 values in 1 x 1.5" boxes using stippling. Render the basic geometric shapes of the cube, cylinder, and sphere in both crosshatching and stippling.
Week 13

Both a contour and value study of your features. Look in the mirror to draw. Day 1 draw your eyes, day 2 draw your nose and eyes, day 3 draw your nose and mouth, day 4 draw ears from photographs.
Week 14
