Grading Procedures and Policies

Points are assigned to projects. The sketchbook is worth 15 points. During the first three weeks of class you will be working on developing eye-hand coordination and doing many quick studies and gesture drawings. So that you can focus on drawing rather than producing finished drawings, these drawings will not be graded individually. Instead, you will be able to earn up to 15 points for attendance, effort, development, and class participation. If an emergency requires that you be absent from class during those 3 weeks, you may make up the work by drawing for an equivalent amount of time outside of class using the techniques taught in the lesson with instructor's permission.

Following the initial exercises, weekly drawing projects will be assigned. They are worth 10 points each and represent the remaining portion of the grade. Because the class includes working on developing skills, half of the drawing grade will be based on class participation, effort, and contributions. Projects will be assessed also according to the following criteria: presentation, composition, concept, overall impact, how well it solves the problem, innovation, degree of challenge or risk, and appropriate use of media. Improvements may be made on assignments and resubmitted within one week from the time the project is returned. All work will be kept for a final review at the end of the term to demonstrate progress.

Portfolio Review: At the end of the term, all work will be submitted for a final review.

Grading Scale: A=90-100%; B=80-89.99%; C=70-79.99%; D=60-69.99%; F= under 60%

ATTENDANCE:
Regular class attendance is required. Excessive absences (more than 3) will lower your grade unless additional assignments are completed. Call my office and leave a message notifying me of any unusual circumstances that may prevent you from attending or completing your work.

College Policy: An instructor may withdraw a student for excessive absence if the student has missed the equivalent of three hours of instruction unless arrangements satisfactory to the instructor can be made by the student to demonstrate that he/she can make acceptable academic progress.

WITHDRAWAL:
Students may withdraw from any semester course prior to the end of the twelfth week of the full term, or 80 percent of any instructional part of term. Specific withdrawal dates are available by term in the Campus Admissions and Records Offices or published in the schedule of courses.

Up to the last day of the twelfth week of the semester, a student may withdraw from a course(s) for any reason. Withdrawal from a course prior to the last day of the second week of the semester will have no notation made in permanent records, withdrawal thereafter will be noted with a "W."

If a student misses class time for the equivalent of one week of instruction, an instructor has the option to withdraw the student for excessive absence. The instructor may elect not to exercise this option, however, and it is the student's responsibility to make sure that an official withdrawal takes place.

All transactions involving withdrawal from courses shall be done in writing and on forms provided by the college. A student's failure to attend classes shall not constitute an official withdrawal. (above extracted from official College Policy).

INCOMPLETE (I) GRADES:
A notation of "I" indicates that a student has not completed all course requirements as a result of circumstances judged by the instructor to be beyond the student's control. A student must complete all course requirements no later than the end of the sixth week of the academic term in which the "I" was noted. Failure to complete such requirements will result in an "F" (failing) grade. (extracted from official College Policy)

DISABILITIES ACT:
If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible.
