Contour Drawing

How it should look:
Continuous line
A strong, consistent line drawing
Not a sketchy line
Not an outline
Describes the contours - plane changes of a form
Describes volumes
Initially drawings often look out of proportion, lines won't meet at edges.

OBJECTIVES
Develops eye-hand coordination
Requires you to look at the object as you draw

MATERIALS
White paper
Black pen, medium width

SETUP
Begin with small objects such as bottles, silveware, shoes, draped cloth. As you progress try people and their surroundings.

DRAWING PROCESS
Look only at the subject matter as you draw. Don't look at your paper. Imagine that your pen point is touching the surface of what you are trying to draw. Move your eye and pen point slowly and simultaneously. If you reach a dead end, you may look down to reposition your pen. Don't draw unless you are looking at the subject matter. This is a very slow drawing process that requires your concentration.
